Johnston runs from the dense neighborhoods along the Providence line, like Graniteville, Thornton and Simmonsville, out to wooded western roads with homes on bigger lots.
Two kinds of Johnston
The eastern side of town looks a lot like Providence and North Providence: older two-families, post-war singles and village streets. Out west the houses spread out on larger lots among the trees, many of them newer, with garages, sheds and outdoor lighting on long driveways.
When the trees come down
Wooded roads mean branches on the lines. When a nor’easter or a tropical storm rolls through, those neighborhoods can be among the last to get power back. That makes a properly installed generator worth a serious look, connected with transfer equipment so it can never feed back onto the lines a utility crew is working on.
Outbuildings and outdoor power
Detached garages, sheds and workshops need their own circuits, run the right way with the right protection. Outdoor outlets need GFCI protection and in-use covers, and motion LED floods make a long driveway safer at night.

Johnston questions
Asked in Johnston.
Does YF Electric work in Johnston?
Yes. Johnston is next to Providence and inside our regular area. Call (401) 753-1030.
Is it safe to plug my generator into a dryer outlet?
No. Backfeeding a house through an outlet can energize the utility lines and injure line workers, and it can damage your wiring and the generator. A generator should connect through a transfer switch or a listed interlock installed by an electrician.
Can you run power to my detached garage?
Yes. A detached garage or shed needs a properly sized circuit or feeder, installed in conduit or with cable rated for burial, with GFCI protection where required and a permit and inspection.
